What is Proton Therapy?

Proton therapy is recommended by doctors for the treatment of cancers. Advanced radiation therapy is proton therapy. Both benign and malignant tumors are treated with it. Because these radiations have fewer side effects than standard radiations, they are becoming increasingly popular. Liver cancer, lung cancer, esophageal cancer, brain cancer, breast tumor, spinal tumor, and sarcoma are among the cancers for which proton treatment is useful. If we talk about hospitals, in Spain, there are many proton therapy hospitals that patients can choose from. Proton therapy has several advantages over regular radiation therapy. With proton radiotherapy, surgeons have more command over energy transmission into cancerous cells.

How does it work?

The beam of energy in traditional radiation therapy enters the body, passes through the tumor, and exits the other side. Beyond the tumor, this “exit dose” of radiation may affect healthy tissue. Protons, on the other hand, are larger than the particles utilized in normal radiation. They concentrate more of their power on the tumor. This burst of energy can be shown as the Bragg peak on a graph. Proton Beam Therapy is one of the most modern forms of radiation therapy available today. It uses a high-energy proton beam to treat cancer. It’s a type of particle therapy that will permanently revolutionize how cancer is treated. It enables tailored treatment and escalation, unlike any other radiation therapy.

The protons stop after transferring the energy to the tumor: they do not depart the tumor and enter the surrounding tissue on the other side. Proton therapy lowers exposure to radiation and possible damage to normal tissue in sensitive places like the brain, eyes, spinal cord, heart, major blood arteries, and nerves in this manner.

Proton treatment necessitates meticulous planning to ensure that the proton beam reaches its intended target. Before each session, you may be subjected to imaging tests such as computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to get images of the tumor and surrounding area. The therapists may draw marks on your body to draw attention to the treatment area, but these are usually only short-term.

Recovery:-

Most people may return home and continue their normal activities after receiving proton beam treatment. Your doctor may arrange tests to see how the treatment is impacting the tumor and change your treatment if necessary for certain tumors.

Cost of Proton Therapy:-

Proton therapy costs vary from hospital to hospital and are determined by the medical facility. The cost of a Proton Therapy kit usually covers all of the patient’s expenses before and after surgery. The medical bill usually includes hospitalization, surgery, nursing, drugs, and anesthesia.

If a patient stays in the hospital longer than planned because of delayed recovery, a new diagnosis, or difficulties after surgery, proton therapy expenditures can rise. Proton therapy’s success rate is mainly dependant on the facility where the patient chooses to receive treatment. This is because many hospitals charge a high fee for a service yet, due to a lack of resources, cut corners on the care they deliver.

Proton therapy costs vary depending on the number of rounds of treatment necessary throughout treatment. While some insurance companies may pay the costs of proton treatment, the majority may not. Before you make a purchase, make sure to verify with your healthcare provider.

Note:- A number of factors can affect the success rate. According to a recent survey, the rate of success for breast cancer without tumors and uncomplicated prostate cancer is measured in three-year survival rates and ranges from 97.2 percent to 99 percent in women and men, accordingly.
