Do Humans have to Worry about Parasitic Infections?

We know that our pets can become infested with parasites and worms, but what about us humans? While this may not be the most pleasant topic to discuss, it is one that is very important for our health. The short answer is yes, humans can get infested with worms. Many different types of worms in fact.

There are several species of parasitic worms that commonly infect humans. These are:

  • Roundworms
  • Pinworms
  • Hookworms
  • Tapeworms

Roundworms can be between 6 and 12 inches long. They exist in soils around the world. Humans become infected with them when they are exposed to contaminated soil, feces, food, or water that contains roundworm eggs.

Pinworms are the most common worm infestation in the United States, though they also exist around the world. They are about half an inch long. Humans get infected with them by coming in contact with contaminated stool. These infections are common in children.

Hookworms exist in warm climates. They are most commonly transmitted to people that walk barefoot on contaminated soil. Similar in size to pinworms, hookworms are about ½ inch long.

Tapeworms are the largest of all parasitic worms. They are flat and segmented and can grow to be many feet long. They live in the intestines and feed on the food that the host consumes. They are transmitted from consuming undercooked meat, especially beef and pork.

The Importance of Deworming

Just like we deworm our pets, we should consider deworming ourselves regularly as well. Most people do not do this because the idea that we could have a parasite is disturbing. However much we may not like it, parasites are definitely a real issue that many people are affected by. In fact, it is estimated that up to 3 billion people are affected by parasites globally. That’s nearly half the population! Parasitic infections are a natural thing that occurs many times throughout our lives, and they are nothing to worry about—as long as you know how to take care of them.

A parasite is an organism that feeds on a host at the host’s expense. So, they can rob us of nutrients and can also eliminate their toxic waste inside us. It’s no doubt an unpleasant thing to think about… but it’s something to be aware of if you wish to take full control of your health.

Parasites underlie many health issues and can negatively impact your immune system. Most people that have them also don’t know they do, since there is not a lot of public education about parasites. Plus, they are so small, usually live inside us, and are masters of disguise—so actually seeing them is rare. Still, by getting rid of parasites, we can support our health and immunity so that we can be at our absolute best.
